Why am I joining the IDF?
Many ask me why in the world I would want to join another country's army instead of remaining in school, or fighting for my own country. I am not a violent person, neither do I believe violence is the right solution. Furthermore, I do not resent Arabs or Muslims in any way, shape or form. I have had many Middle Eastern and Muslim friends, co-workers and teachers.
So why?
Some quick reasons off the top of my head:
Aside from that, I also see this as an opportunity that not many are lucky enough to have.
As quoted from The Lone Soldier's website (Click here for exact source):
"...if any of you are wondering why I'm out here doing what I'm doing, it's because when I'm old, gray and wrinkled on my death bed, I'd like to be able to utter these two sentences: 'I've been there and I've done that. I've seen more than most and experienced life to its fullest.'"
So why?
Some quick reasons off the top of my head:
- Who has the opportunity to say they've been a medic, spokesperson, or fitness trainer (etc.) in the Israeli army?
- Great way to stay in shape for two years
- Gives me time to think about/ figure out my interests and strengths > eventually pick a major
- Gives me an excuse to learn Hebrew and possibly more Arabic
- A very personal experience to defend amazing people you live side by side with
- Job opportunities? Possibly
- Adventure!
- Allows me to appreciate my life so much more
- After the 18 months are over, I can return to normal life without any further commitments
- No humidity! No more frizz for 1 1/2 years. (NOT a major reason. Just a plus)
- One more country to cross off over my bucket list of places to visit.
- Gives me the opportunity to have a first hand look into whats happening in the middle east
- Amazing experience!
- New friends from all over the world
- I believe I will grow, challenge myself and have fun! What other reasons do I need?
Aside from that, I also see this as an opportunity that not many are lucky enough to have.
